Rules for Roman Numerals
Roman numerals are composed of seven fundamental symbols: I (1), V (5), X (10), L (50), C (100), D (500), and M (1000). These symbols form the foundation of the Roman numeral system and can be combined in various ways to represent different numbers.
Roman numerals can be repeated up to three times in succession to add value. For instance, II represents 2, and III represents 3. This rule applies to the symbols I, X, C, and M. It’s important to note that the symbols V, L, and D are never repeated because their purpose is to provide midpoint values that bridge the gaps between I and X, X and C, and C and M, respectively.
The placement of a smaller numeral before a larger numeral indicates subtraction, while placing it after signifies addition. For example:
- IV (4) is understood as “1 before 5”, where I is placed before V to indicate subtraction.
- VI (6), on the other hand, means “1 after 5”, signifying addition.
