What are Dolch Sight Words?

Dolch sight words are a list of high-frequency words that young children are encouraged to recognize instantly by sight, without needing to sound them out. First compiled by Edward William Dolch in the 1930s and 40s, the list includes 220 service words (like the, and, said, can) and 95 nouns (like dog, ball, house).

Because these words appear so often in children’s books, mastering them helps preschool, kindergarten, and early elementary students read more fluently and with greater confidence.
